Wi-Fi calling

Wi-Fi calling (also known as VoWiFi or Voice over Wi-Fi) is a feature that allows you to make and receive calls over a Wi-Fi network instead of a traditional cellular connection. This ensures you can stay connected even in areas with poor cellular reception, such as basements, reinforced buildings, or remote locations. On this page, we will explain the benefits of Wi-Fi calling, the requirements for the service, and how to set it up on your device.

In 2026, virtually all Canadian carriers –  including major networks and their flanker brands – offer Wi-Fi calling as a standard feature. Almost every smartphone released in recent years supports this technology. Once activated, your phone automatically switches to Wi-Fi when the cellular signal is weak. By 2026, this technology is fully integrated with 5G Standalone (5G SA) networks, meaning your phone can switch between Wi-Fi and VoNR (Voice over New Radio) without any audible interruption

This is also a perfect solution when your phone is in Airplane Mode, provided you have an active Wi-Fi connection.

While Wi-Fi calling is widely available, please note that:

  • Most monthly BYOP plans (postpaid) and many prepaid plans include Wi-Fi calling at no extra cost, but some older “legacy” plans may require an update.
  • While most phones support it, features may vary if you bring your own device from another country or carrier.
  • In Canada, you must provide a registered emergency address when enabling Wi-Fi calling. This allows emergency services to locate you if you call 9-1-1 via Wi-Fi, as GPS location data may be less accurate than on a cellular network.
  • While many carriers allow you to call Canadian numbers for free via Wi-Fi while abroad, roaming charges may still apply if you call international numbers. Always check your carrier’s specific policy before leaving Canada.

Benefits of Wi-Fi calling

  • Enhanced coverage
  • Crystal clear audio
  • No additional monthly fees

Cons of Wi-Fi calling

  • Poor Wi-Fi signal can lead to dropped calls
  • Using public Wi-Fi networks carries minor security risks (use a VPN or secure network!)
  • Limited 9-1-1 call capabilities

What is the difference between Wi-Fi calling, VoLTE, and VoNR?

VoLTE (Voice over LTE) and VoNR  allow you to make calls over 4G and 5G networks respectively. While Wi-Fi calling uses a local router, VoLTE/VoNR use the carrier’s towers. In 2026, these systems are designed to hand off calls to each other seamlessly as you move in and out of Wi-Fi range.

What happens if I leave the Wi-Fi range?

If your Wi-Fi connection becomes unstable or you move out of range, the call will typically transition seamlessly to the 4G or 5G network without hanging up, provided you have cellular coverage in that spot.

Can I use Wi-Fi calling on both iPhone and Android?

Yes. Most iPhone models from the last several years (including iPhone 12 and newer) fully support Wi-Fi calling and 5G integration. When it comes to Android, virtually all devices released in the last 5–6 years, such as the Samsung Galaxy S21 series or later, are compatible.

Tip! To ensure the best performance with Wi-Fi calling and VoLTE, always keep your device’s software updated to the latest version.

Below are instructions for the most popular devices in the Canadian market. Please note that menu names may vary slightly depending on your specific carrier’s firmware.
