Porting your number
Moving a phone number from one provider to another is called porting, and it’s a straightforward process. You can keep your number whether you are switching to a monthly bring your own phone plan or a prepaid plan. Your new provider will handle the transfer and ensure your old service is cancelled automatically once the port is complete.
How does porting work?
Canadian providers use your Account Number or IMEI number to identify your line. To prevent fraud, Canada uses a secure “Authorization SMS” system. When your new provider starts the transfer, you will receive a text message on your old SIM card asking you to confirm the move.
Please note! Do not cancel your current service before switching. Your phone number must be active for the transfer to work.
Some providers may also require you to toggle a “Port Protection” or “Number Lock” setting to Off in their official app before the transfer can begin. Check your security settings if the transfer doesn’t trigger the SMS immediately.
What you need to port your number
- Your Account Number: You can find this on your latest monthly bill or in your provider’s mobile app.
- An unlocked phone: By law, all mobile devices in Canada are sold unlocked, but if you have an older device, ensure it’s ready for a new SIM or eSIM.
- Security PIN or IMEI: Some providers may ask for your account PIN or your phone’s 15-digit IMEI number.
How to transfer your phone number to another provider
1. Check your current agreement
If you have a monthly plan, check if you are still in a “device balance” period (usually a 24-month term). While you can switch at any time, you may have to pay off the remaining balance of your phone before leaving. If you are on a BYOP plan, you are likely not on a long-term contract and can switch freely.
2. Choose your new plan
Select a new provider and pick a BYOP plan or prepaid plan. You can do this online, in-store, or via an app. During the sign-up process, choose the option to “Transfer an existing number.”
3. Provide your details
Enter your current account number and phone number when prompted. If you are using an eSIM (which is now the standard for most new devices in Canada) your new service can often be activated within minutes via a QR code or app. If you prefer or require a physical SIM card, you will need to wait for it to arrive by mail.
4. Respond to the confirmation SMS
Once the new provider starts the port, you will receive a text message from your current (old) provider. Keep your old SIM card in your phone (or your old eSIM active) to receive this message. You cannot authorize the transfer from your new SIM until this step is completed.
You must reply “YES” to this message (usually within 90 minutes) to authorize the transfer. If you don’t reply, the transfer will be cancelled for security reasons.
5. Complete the switch
Once you’ve confirmed via SMS, your old SIM card will stop working, and your new SIM (or eSIM) will become active with your original number. This typically takes anywhere from a few minutes to a maximum of one business day.
Can I port my number with a prepaid plan?
Yes, you can port your number even if you are on a prepaid plan. The process is the same, but since there is no monthly bill, you will need to find your account number in your online profile or contact your current provider’s customer service to get it.
Can I port data only lines or Apple Watch plans?
Yes, but these are often handled differently than voice lines. If you have a linked Apple Watch or tablet plan, ensure you mention this to your new provider to keep your devices synced under the new account.
Can I port my number if I still have a contract?
Yes. Under the CRTC Wireless Code, you have the right to keep your number even if you still owe a balance on your device or have time left on your agreement. However, be aware that your old provider will send you a final bill including any remaining early cancellation fees or outstanding device payments.
Once the port is finished, your old account is closed automatically – you don’t need to call them to cancel.
