What is considered personal data?

According to PIPEDA, personal data is any information about an identifiable individual. Examples include name, address, email address, IP address, gender or location information.

Our basis for handling your information: Your consent

Under Canadian privacy legislation (including PIPEDA and Quebec’s Bill 25), your informed consent is the foundation for how we collect, use, and disclose your personal information. We aim to be transparent about why we are collecting the information at the point of collection.

Depending on the situation, your consent may be express or implied.

Express consent

We will ask for your direct and specific consent for actions involving more sensitive data or optional functions. This includes:

  • Analytics and Advertising Cookies: We will only place analytics cookies (such as Google Analytics) or marketing and affiliate tracking cookies if you actively provide your permission (opt-in) via our cookie banner.
  • Account Creation: When you create an account to leave reviews, we ask you to expressly agree to our Terms of Use. Through this action, you consent to our collection of your name and email address to create and manage your account, and to verify the authenticity of your reviews.

Implied consent

In situations where your purpose for providing us with information is obvious, we may rely on implied consent. A “reasonable person” would understand that we need to process the data to fulfill your request.

  • Contact Form: When you use our contact form and provide your name and email address, you give us your implied consent to use this information for the sole purpose of replying to your message.

Exceptions to consent (Legal obligation)

In rare cases, we may be legally required to process or retain your information without your consent, for example, to comply with a law or at the request of a public authority.

Your right to withdraw consent

You are always in control of your data. You can withdraw your consent at any time.

  • For cookies, you can change your settings or withdraw your consent via our Cookie Policy.
  • For your user account, you can log in at any time to change your details or use the tool in your profile settings to permanently delete your entire account.

If you withdraw your consent, we will stop processing your data for that purpose, unless we have a legal obligation to retain it.

What personal data do we collect?

This section explains what data we collect, why we collect it, and how long we store it.

Information you provide to us yourself

In the following situations, you will need to provide your personal details yourself.

When you use our contact form

To send us a message via our contact form, you need to provide your email address and your name. We need this information in order to respond to your message. This data is processed in our email system (Google Workspace) and will be permanently deleted as soon as we have handled your case.

When you use our feedback feature

The purpose of this feature is solely to collect anonymous feedback to help us improve our website.

You are not required to provide any personal information, and we explicitly instruct users not to submit personal data in the feedback form, as clearly stated in the feature’s disclaimer.

If you choose to include personal data in your message (such as your name, email, or phone number) against our instructions, this data will be stored temporarily in our system.

Our handling of such accidentally submitted data is strictly limited:

  • We will not use this personal data for any purpose.
  • We will not use it to contact you.
  • The data will be permanently deleted as soon as our team has reviewed and processed the general feedback provided.

When you create an account to leave reviews

If you want to leave a review about a provider, you need to create an account with us. We require this step to help ensure that all reviews are genuine and to prevent spam or inauthentic submissions.

The information we store in connection with this is first and last name, email address and password. We also save all the reviews you have written. You can view all this information in your profile when you are logged in.

Your control and storage period

  • We provide you with direct control over your data. When logged in, you can access and amend your personal details at any time via your account profile. You can also use the tool in your profile settings to permanently delete your entire account.
  • This information is stored for as long as you have an active account with us. To comply with data protection principles, we have a policy for inactive accounts. If an account has no login activity for 24 consecutive months, it will be flagged as inactive. We will then contact you via email, and if the account is not reactivated within 30 days, it will be permanently deleted.

Information we collect based on your consent

If you provide your consent via our cookie banner, we use cookies and analytics tools (such as Google Analytics) to collect data about visitor behavior. We do this to understand how visitors use our website and to improve our services and user experience.

This data, which is treated as personal data, can include:

  • Location information: We see your approximate location (e.g., country or city) based on your IP address. (Your IP address is automatically anonymized in Google Analytics, which means your full IP address is never stored on their servers).
  • User behavior: This helps us understand how you interact with our site, such as which pages you visit and how long you stay on them.
  • Technical information: This includes the type of device (mobile, computer, etc.), browser, and operating system you are using.

Storage period

The user-level data collected by Google Analytics is set to be automatically deleted from their servers after 14 months. This retention period resets on new activity. This does not affect the aggregated, anonymous statistics we use to see overall trends.

Managing your consent

We will only collect this data if you actively accept analytics cookies in our cookie banner. You can view, change, or withdraw your consent at any time via our Cookie Policy, which also provides a full list of the cookies we use.

Our business model and affiliate links

To keep our comparison service completely free for you to use, we are financed through affiliate marketing.

This means that when you use our service to compare providers and click on a link to an operator’s website (e.g., to sign up for a mobile plan), we may receive a commission.

How this works (Data processing)

For this to work technically, tracking technology (such as cookies or tracking links) is used to identify that the referral came from our website. This process involves the collection and sharing of data, such as a cookie ID or your IP address, with our partners (the operators) and our affiliate networks.

This tracking will only occur if you have given your explicit consent for “Advertisement” cookies via our cookie banner.

You can find a complete list of the specific cookies we use, as well as manage your consent, at any time in our Cookie Policy.

Transfers of data outside of Canada

To provide our services, we use certain third-party suppliers who may be based outside of Canada.

This means your personal information may be transferred to, processed in, and stored in a foreign country, such as the United States, where our service providers (like Google LLC for Google Workspace ) may have servers.

Our accountability for your information

Under Canadian privacy laws (PIPEDA), we remain accountable for your personal information when it is transferred to a third party in another jurisdiction. We take steps to ensure your data is protected by implementing contractual agreements and other measures to provide a comparable level of protection to that which it would receive in Canada.

However, while your information is in another country, it may be subject to the laws of that jurisdiction and could be accessed by local governments, courts, or law enforcement agencies.

Google Workspace (Email and internal documents)

We use Google Workspace (provided by Google LLC) for our internal operations, including our company email system. When you contact us via email or our contact form, your personal information (such as your name, email address, and the content of your message) is processed by Google and may be transferred to and stored on servers in the United States (US).

Our Safeguards: We take reasonable steps to ensure that any overseas recipient of your personal information handles it in accordance with Canadian privacy laws (such as PIPEDA). We do this by entering into Data Processing Agreements (DPAs) with our suppliers (like Google) which contractually oblige them to protect your data to a high standard. While we rely on mechanisms like Google’s certification under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework (DPF) as evidence of their strong security practices, our legal basis for the transfer is our commitment to taking reasonable steps as required by Canadian law.

Analytics and advertising partners (Based on consent)

Other services we use, such as Google Analytics and various affiliate networks, may also be based in the US or other third countries.

Any transfer of data for these purposes will only occur if you have given your explicit consent for analytics or marketing cookies via our cookie banner. These transfers are also managed by ensuring our partners (like affiliate networks) are contractually bound to protect your data and handle it in accordance with strict privacy standards.

Your data protection rights

Under Canadian privacy legislation, you have specific rights designed to give you control over your personal information. To exercise any of these rights, the easiest way to contact us is through our contact form.

Your rights may vary slightly depending on your province (for example, Quebec’s Bill 25 provides specific additional rights), but they generally include:

  • The right of access: You have the right to request a copy of the personal information we hold about you and to receive information about how we have used or disclosed it.
  • The right to information: You have the right to be provided with clear, transparent, and easily understandable information about how we collect and use your personal data. (This privacy policy is one of the ways we do this) .
  • The right to rectification (correction): If the information we hold about you is inaccurate or incomplete, you have the right to challenge its accuracy and ask us to correct it.
  • The right to withdraw consent: You have the right to withdraw your consent to our processing of your data at any time (subject to legal or contractual restrictions). For residents of Quebec, this also includes the right to erasure (or “de-indexation”), allowing you to ask us to delete your personal data when it is no longer needed for the purpose it was collected.
  • Rights in relation to automated decision making: You have the right not to be subject to a decision based solely on automated processing (like profiling) that produces legal or similarly significant effects on you.
  • The right to data portability: In certain circumstances (particularly for residents of Quebec), you have the right to receive your personal data in a structured, commonly used, and machine-readable format, allowing you to transfer your data to another service.

If you believe that we have processed your personal information incorrectly, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) or, if you are a resident of Quebec, the Commission d’accès à l’information du Québec (CAI).
